Children’s University

Friday 28th Aug
Helping children discover a love of learning — and the confidence to dream big.

Children's University Swinburne turns learning beyond the classroom into something to celebrate. Children choose their own adventures — museums, galleries, science activities, sports clubs and more — logging their hours in a Passport to Learning and working towards milestones, from a Bronze award all the way to a "Doctorate." When they reach them, they're celebrated at a formal graduation on Swinburne's Hawthorn campus, donning caps and gowns as family and friends cheer them on.

Behind the fun sits a serious purpose. Australia has one of the widest gaps between its highest and lowest performing students, closely tied to educational and socio-economic disadvantage. Children's University is an early intervention that reaches into disadvantaged communities, giving the children who need it most the chance to build curiosity, confidence and agency in their own learning — and helping break the cycle of disadvantage.

Swinburne is the only university in Victoria delivering Children's University, drawing on our founding belief in opening education to all young people, "not merely the fortunate few." And the program works: children who take part become more engaged, more confident learners, with real gains in attendance, attainment and achievement.

Every gift helps more children take part — discovering new passions, building confidence, and working towards a graduation they'll never forget. And the impact is real and measured: among participating children, 83% feel more confident about their classwork and three in four pay more attention in class.

Your support can:

  • Open up learning — helping children access museums, galleries, science activities and free school-holiday programs on campus.

  • Reach more children — a gift of $10,000 a year can bring Children's University to a whole new school, giving around 30 more children the chance to take part.

  • Put STEM into classrooms —fund reusable STEM Learning Kits that are shared across partner schools, putting hands-on science into young hands year after year.

However you give, your support helps reach children in disadvantaged communities — opening doors to learning early, and helping break the cycle of educational disadvantage.

Where it’s needed most

Not every opportunity fits neatly into a single fund — and some of the most important ones arrive unexpectedly. A gift to the area of greatest need lets Swinburne direct your support wherever it can do the most good right now, from student hardship to emerging projects.

Your gift goes where it’s needed most, with 100% directed to Swinburne and no administrative fees deducted.
